Yes, I have mouth herpes. Fever blisters. Cold sores. Whatever you call them, it's all herpes. And I have it. Have had it, in fact, for as long as I can remember. (Go on with the teasing, I've heard it all. Go on. I'll wait.)
Are you done? Good.
Anyhoo. I have one coming in on the bottom left lip. I put Abreva on it this morning, and went on my merry way.
That was, however, before MoMo didn't get a nap today. A 20 month old should never have a nap withheld. For any reason. Especially one so lame as "social services couldn't get their heads out of their asses long enough to schedule bio-mom's supervised visits around naptime."
When I got to day care to pick up the babies, MoMo saw me, burst into tears, and ran across the room into my arms. She cried herself to sleep in the car.
When we got home, I tried to rock her, and she didn't want any of that, letting me know by rearing back her head and clocking me square in the mouth. My teeth still hurt.
And now, both my lips, top and bottom, all over, have that tingly "you're gonna get a fever blister" feeling. Sores on both lips in late June in summer heat. NO. FREAKIN. FAIR. And nothing really prevents them or makes them go away. They are just flat miserable.
And all because some caseworker did not take my "DO NOT MESS WITH NAPTIME" admonition seriously.

Ugh, I hate cold sores, had them frequently since I was 13. I would tell you to buy 'Compeed Herpes Patches', they worked wonders with me, but apparently they don't get sold in the US yet. There's also homeopathic stuff you can take, which should help prevent you from getting them and help with them when they are already there ( I used rhus tox http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_coldso.htm)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestions! I'm going to look into them today. The only thing I've ever found that comes close to working is to wait until the fully come up, pop them with a needle and bleach them.
ReplyDeleteThe downside is that it burns like the devil is dancing on your lip.
Ughhhh, I'm so sorry! I can't imagine a worse day :-(
ReplyDeleteDo you have Aloe Vera plants? I have had good success with a fresh leaf from the plant, opened up and laid across the cold sore....for as long and as often as possible. (Not easy when one has kids to deal with...my most successful 'cure' was during a 4 hour journey where I could leave it on almost constantly) Tastes vile...and sometimes stings.....but definitely worth a try.

My doctor actually called me in a script for an antiviral medicine, that worked WONDERS... it was less than three dollars for the entire treatment, no side effects.
ReplyDeleteI will never suffer through them again!!
I HATE those! Glad you got some antiviral meds to help - Lysine does too (find it in the vitamin aisle at the grocery store). We keep some on hand and start pounding them when you get that 'feeling'....
ReplyDeleteOooh. Try some melissa/lemon balm essential oil on it and see how that goes (you can get it at pretty much any health food store or Whole Foods). I've seen it used several times with success, but haven't had need to try it. If it works, I'd LOVE to know about it so I can keep passing it on with confidence.
